What is Interim Management?

Interim Management or Management-On-Demand (M-O-D), as we call it at Dahl & Kjærgaard, is a situation- determined management tool. In brief, this means that management in special situations can choose to appoint an Interim Manager in their organization for a limited period of time.

In this way, Interim Management can be beneficial in certain situations where the company needs to solve high-priority management tasks but at the time does not have the necessary resources or key competencies available in the existing organization.

Traditionally, companies have met the challenge of obtaining at any given time the necessary management and specialist competencies by

  • Finding the necessary competencies within the organization
  • Recruiting new employees with the desired competencies (full-time employment)
  • Purchasing external consultant assistance

These three possibilities are well-known for procuring executive and specialist competencies but they may not be the optimal solution for the company.

Interim Management must be considered as an alternative to these three resource models. It is the nature of the assignment that determines how and by whom the task is solved with the optimal efficiency and effect, and this is where the Interim Management model comes into the picture.

The strength of Interim Management can be best illustrated when a company is in need of solving a temporary management task that has high priority in the organization and some complexity – and where the executing manager’s competencies are crucial for success.

In general, the profile of an Interim Manager can be described as:
”An experienced leader who assumes a management position in a company or institution with the intention of solving a concrete management task for a limited period of time.”

Perspectives in Interim Management

Globalization is all around us and we are increasingly influenced by globalization. At the very least, the business world must adapt to competing in a global market place.

The demands for survival, development and continued growth for our companies are increasing on all fronts. Today, companies must be able to deliver innovative products and services, streamline production methods, develop their sales channels, and ensure top professional management and flexible internal processes to make a difference in a global market.

In this perspective, the use of Interim Management can be considered as one of the initiatives the company’s management can utilize because the model is professional, effective, flexible, economic, beneficial and future-oriented.

Not only is this model beneficial from a company perspective, it also meets the requirements of tomorrow’s work force where mobility is increasing and the demands for a personally challenging and meaningful job are growing more and more.

The point is that if we believe that the future workforce will be distinguished by even more mobility than what we are experiencing today (more job changes among employees means shorter employment periods), Interim Management can be the model that satisfies all parties.

At Dahl & Kjærgaard, we call our Interim Management solution Management-On-Demand because we want to be future-oriented and because we want to provide our clients with all forms for recruitment– both short-term and long-term.
